Southampton was hurt during WWII because the Germans realised the strategic importance as the major industrial area on the South Coast and also because of the city's links to the Supermarine Spitfire fighter aircraft. The Spitfire was invented and manufactured in Southampton and the factory in Woolston was bombed several times, which slowed manufacture of the aircraft at a vital time in the survival of the country.

Much of the City of Southampton was destroyed by the German Bombs, ironically, it was the locally-based Ordnance Survey's maps which made the Luftwaffe attacks so accurate, as they were used to bomb Southampton. One notable building to survive the bombings was Southampton's oldest, St. Michaels Church. The Church was thought to have been built in 1070, the building has been added to many times over the centuries but its central tower dates from Norman times. The spire was an important navigation aid for the German pilots and consequently they were ordered to avoid it.

Southampton has a very strong economy, and in the period between 1995 and 2003 there was massive growth of 52.4%. The most significant sectors in terms of number of businesses and number of employees are distribution, tourism, and business and finance related activities.
